Noah’s 6th Birthday!!

Posted on January 9th, 2015 in Cakes, Cookies, Cupcakes

My sweet Noah is now 6 years old and all six of them have been so wonderful.

This year he decided to celebrate his birthday with a Pokemon theme party with all his friends.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take a lot of pictures of the cake. I was in such a rush at home that I took the cake directly to the venue. Now I regret it.

This Pokemon cake has the Water element represented by the standing candy rock sticks on the top of the cake. We also have the Grass and the Fire element, each covering one third of the cake (shown on the right top and bottom side of the picture below).  We couldn’t miss the basic element of Electricity shown on the very front of the cake.

I did take a lot of pictures of the cookies thank goodness. Typically, when I’m the one hosting the party I am working on the cake and the cookies and everything else until the very last minute. This time I was able to finish them the day (or two) before the party.

First, the party favors. Pokeballs sugar cookies were individually packaged and tied with pretty ribbons for each one of the children.

The tray had a combination of all the cookie designs and his special birthday message cookies.

Although I wish I could have incorporated a lot of the Pokemon characters, I could only do so many of them. I focused on some of the ones Noah requested, his favorite ones. Some of the characters include: Pikachu (my favorite!), Charizard (Noah’s favorite), Charmander, Totodile, and Squirtle.

This is Squirtle, a water Pokemon.

squirtle IMG_7542

Charizard an evolved form of Charmelion, a fire Pokemon. Noah’s favorite Pokemon because it is a dragon (cousin of the Dinosaurs, he believes) and it has fire.

charizard IMG_7559

Totodile. More like a crocodile right? This cutie is another water basic Pokemon like Squirtle.

tododile IMG_7566

The adorable Pokemon on the bottom right is Charmander. He is a fire basic Pokemon that actually evolves into Charizard (the one to it’s left). I didn’t get a picture by itself.

I love how the Pokemon logos turned out.

My birthday boy Noah (bottom right side next to the boy wearing #21, Jack) and some of his friends. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get all the children in the picture. Some kiddos were outside the party room having fun.

The party was so much fun. We actually held it at the same location as last year. Noah specifically requested it. Even though we went to look at other fun places, he said that it was so much fun playing at Backyard Adventures, that he couldn’t go anywhere else. He was in charge!

I never in my life imagined that I would have a son that would enjoy watching the same cartoons I watched as a young girl. I was thrilled to hand him over my Pokemon movie collection as well as some of my Pokemon figurines. I never had Pokemon cards, but we have to thank Santa Claus for bringing him a large collection of trading cards that he can now play with.

Happy birthday my loving son. I love you with all my heart!!!

Puppy Love Cake

Posted on October 12th, 2013 in Cakes, Cookies

About a month ago, my wonderful sister in law gave me the opportunity to design and create a cake to celebrate her daughter’s 2nd birthday. I always appreciate the freedom of her cake requests. She provides a main theme and several sources of inspiration, but she lets me play with the final cake design.

For Layla’s birthday she asked for a Puppy, multilevel cake. I later received a picture of the beautiful dress Layla would be wearing at the party. Amy also added a few cake ideas on her Pinterest board and the rest was up to me. Love it!!

Here is a collage that features most of the details of the cake.

Puppy Cake Collage

A red doggy collar with a shimmering silver buckle is the detail that separates the tiers. Now I wish I would have made a dog leash… maybe next time.

Puppies 2 IMG_3626 1

A set of cute and playful puppies are the main details of this birthday cake. Since the puppies are all females, I folded stripes of fondant and used them to create the little flowers that you see by their ears. The pink one has a couple of bows though…. with lots of shimmering dust.

Black set of puppy paws are placed on the front of the top tier. I also made smaller gray and brown paws, but they are on the sides and back (and I didn’t take a picture). The doggy bone accents the bottom tier and emphasizes the 2nd birthday.

And here’s a final look of the cake before getting into the cookie part. Oh, cake flavors include Almond cake and Strawberry cake.

Here are the sugar decorated cookies. I absolutely love the many possibilities to decorate Scotty cookies. Their little vest are very versatile and could be well adopted to any color scheme.

A few more doggy cookies. Since I don’t know the specific breed of this cookie cutter, we can assume is a lovely and faithful mutt.

There you go. A wonderful set of treats for a puppy/dog lover of any age. In this case, my now 2 year old niece Layla.

I hope you had a fun and beautiful birthday.

4th of July Birthday

Posted on September 12th, 2013 in Cakes, Cookies, Cupcakes, News

I am super excited to share with you the very special treats I made for my lovely daughter Lillie as she celebrated her 7th birthday this year.

I don’t really struggle much when it comes to the color scheme that I plan to use for her birthday treats. As a 4th of July baby, I always know that I MUST incorporate Red, White & Blue. I do freak about making something that will be much better than the previous year. Now that she is a little bit older and realized what I can do, the challenge can be making a cake that she ‘approves’ and ‘loves’ (if I’m lucky).

This year was a tricky one since I asked her ideas of what she wanted the theme to be or a main design of the cake.  Well… bad questions. She wanted everything and it all sounded so complicated !!!! My dear Lillie asked for a beach cake (and she’s never been to the one) and wanted me to incorporate summer items. At the same time, she mentioned how much she loved the zebra pattern and reminded me that it it would be Independence day.

Oh boy…. After many sleepless nights thinking about how to incorporate ALL those ideas into ONE cake, here’s the end result.

ID47 Cake IMG_3325

ZEBRA: You typically see thick zebra lines/pattern on cakes  added using fondant and ‘glued’ on the cakes. I decided to try a different technique and painted the top and bottom layers of the cakes. I painted the zebra lines on the cake horizontally and diagonally as opposed to many cakes out there where you see them vertically instead. They are also more on the thin side.

4th of July Birthday Collage

Lillie absolutely loves Chocolate cake so there was no other choice. The additional cupcakes were vanilla and a few chocolate. I wish I could have taken a picture of a cut cupcake because the vanilla batter was actually red, white and blue to create multicolor cupcakes! A chocolate star was added as the topper.

ID47 Cake IMG_3315

BOW: I made the bow at the very last minute with fabric ribbon that I found at Michaels. I have always loved this type of bow so I wanted to incorporate it into the cake.

OTHER FOOD: With her birthday falling on such a special day for all of us, I am always very fortunate to find all sorts of goodies out there related to Independence Day. I found  m&m’s, fish crackers, twizzlers and all the silverware and decoration. Yeah!

4 July Treats Collage

COOKIES: The cookie platter included all sorts of playful items related to the beach and hot summers not to mention that odd request of adding zebra patter to the theme.

Going clockwise starting at the top right: Ice Cream Cones, Sunglasses, Swimsuits and Bikinis, playful Kites, and Beachballs.

Cookies Collage

sunglasses IMG_3275

Definitely some of my favorites were the bikinis and the sandals, the sunglasses too. All the sugar cookies were decorated with the same theme in mind. No chocolate designs this time, it was all royal icing.

Clothing Collage

swimsuits IMG_3297

sandals IMG_3269

In the end, I have NO idea what the 4th of July, Zebras and The Beach have to do with each other, but I got it done. Somehow, I think it all worked out.

Lillie's Party 2013

All the girls (and my boy Noah) had a lot of fun.  We celebrated Lillie at a nearby YMCA so the girls (and some adults) were able to get into the pool for a long time.

Happy Birthday sweetheart!! I hope you had a wonderful birthday.

Hello Kitty – Cake

Posted on August 3rd, 2013 in Cakes

This is a Hello Kitty two tier cake inspired by the original HK colorful cake here.

Hello Kitty Cake

HK B&W Collage

Bright, colorful and a bit whimsical, this first birthday cake is covered entirely in my sweet buttercream icing. Can you guess how long it took me to fully decorate this cake? Just take a guess….

HK IMG_3430

HK IMG_3419

Now counting the time spent coloring the buttercream, a bit over three hours!!! This type of decoration requires me to clean the spatula after each stroke… yes… each one!!

I made a few chocolate colorful bows, flowers and HKs and one specially with wings to be place as the focal point of the top tier.

Hello Kitty Chocolate Piece

The top tier features a fondant made number 1 to celebrate the very special first birthday. Several fondant balloons covered in shiny dust to make them pretty and bright.

And a final front look at the cake.

Hello Kitty

As far as cake flavors, the top tier was a marble cake with mocha buttercream. The bottom tier was a strawberry cake with a vanilla beam buttercream filling.

I really really love this cake. I was very happy with the end result and my client was too.

Iowa Hawkeye Cake

Posted on September 7th, 2012 in Cakes

I’m really NOT a football fan. Being from Mexico, football to me means soccer or as we call it,  Futbol !!  Now that’s a sport. I’m sure my BiL would be grinding his teeth if he read this.

No nasty emails please!!

Just because I don’t like follow football doesn’t mean that I don’t make football cakes. In fact, I love making them because they are fun.

This next cake was for a very young person turning a good healthy and wonderful 95 years.  I was excited to start working on it and here’s the final result…

This is a buttercream decorated cake. To achieve the grass color I had to mix so many different Wilton and Americolor colors from greens to browns and even a dab of black. Honestly with the horrible dry weather we were having, I could have gotten away with having yellowish colored grass.

I really could’t feel my hand after piping all that grass on a 11×15 sheet cake. For the letters I used a chocolate mold, but here’s my duh moment. I couldn’t find the mold with the “S” for Hawkeyes so I ended up using a different chocolate mold and added the letter.

Can you see the difference in the letters? I can.

Despite the letter issue that bothered me so much, I was happy with the cake and my client was very happy with it also.

The cake was half white and half chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream filling.

Small football cakes are popular groom’s cakes at weddings. You can see two more football cakes here and here.

Hope you enjoyed this and have a sweet treat today.

Baby Sesame Street Cake

Posted on August 17th, 2012 in Cakes, Cookies, News

I can’t believe that I made this set of cakes and cookies a long time ago and never posted it. Better late than never….

I have been making more and more tiered cakes for birthday celebrations. Tall cakes are not just for weddings. Cakes with several levels or tiers are becoming more popular, at least with me.

I had a previous customer requesting  a tiered cake to celebrate her son’s 1st birthday. Here’s a couple of designs that she liked. I do welcome other cake decorator’s designs *.

With those designs in mind, I created the following cake.

The cake is covered and decorated in fondant. My client is a fan of chocolate delight cake with raspberry filling so the those were the flavors of the entire cake. The cake topper is a cookie and it features baby Cookie Monster. This cake is very popular in my Pinterest site.

Here are some of the other cookies that we made for the the birthday boy.

The cookies are sugar cookies covered with royal icing and the baby sesame street are made out of chocolate.

Whether it is two or more levels/tiers, consider a tiered cake for your next event or celebration. Tall cakes are eye catching and will make your celebration one to remember.

* Pictures of other cakes are always welcome by the way. I will not replicate the cake (because I wouldn’t want other cake decorator doing the same to me) but I will definitely take some of the design ideas and incorporate them into your own cake.
